I know Mondays are a day for me to reminisce but instead I'm going to write a long and rambling post against what seems to be the average gay man's perception of straightness. This is in response to Brenton's recent post and, more so, to the comments he received.
The topic? The obsession so many gay men have with "proving" that every guy is gay.
I want to start off by pointing out that men are men, even if they're gay! And people are still people, no matter what sexuality they have. And along with that, there are certain behaviors common to everyone.
I've heard plenty of times that if a straight guy looks at another guy's dick, it's a sign he's really gay. Uhm, no! If a gay guy looks at a girls boobs, is he straight? No, it only means his eyes are open. EVERYONE looks at boobs and EVERYONE looks at dicks. Not obsessively all the time, but it's true, everyone does.
And why can't a guy find the male body aesthetically pleasing? Every other culture in the world is allowed to, and historically most have as well. I mean, seriously, hi guys: the Renaissance?
Then you get the guys who say that if a straight guy is okay being naked around other guys, it means he's gay. Obviously, these are gay men who have never lived with (comfortable and open-minded) straight men. They wander around naked (well, in underwear or with a towel around their waist) as much as they frikkin' want. They would be naked if our dorm wasn't public! I, the gay one, am the one who doesn't wander around naked much because I'm afraid of popping a boner in front of them. So, thanks for playing, but try again.
Then there's the guys who claim that if a straight guy does anything with another guy, it makes him gay. All I have to say is this: drunk straight girls on spring break.
I think that quells the discussion right there. If they can do it, so can men.
And last, but certainly not least, there's those who say that if a straight man wants to know if a gay man is interested, it means they're gay. Sometimes the straight guys tease too. These are both the same thing: they're looking to be flattered. They're comfortable enough and mature enough to think it's a compliment when someone is attracted to them. Sometimes, okay most of the time, it's annoying. But at the same time it's a compliment -- they think you must have good enough taste to be flattered that you find them attractive. What's homosexual about that?
Anyways, the point is sexuality (by the definition I use anyways) is determined by who you find sexually attractive and that is all. Even though I'm a firm believer in gaydar (mine's fantastic), there is no way of knowing that without hearing it straight from the horse's mouth. The only thing these accusations of homosexuality are going to do is perpetuate the idea that gay people want to convert straight people. This is, once again, an example of homosexuals being their own worst enemy.
Okay, now let's hear everbody else's take on this. I promise not to bite unless you ask real nice. :)

You didn't know? I was converted. Yeah, I just kinda got "sucked" into the whole gay thing...
;)
I agree with you 100% mate. I cant add any more as you have summed things up nicely.

Yeah, guys do have this obsession with it. I mean, I think every male celebrity is. ;-)
Actually, I think our western society DOES have a problem with guy behavious. You're patently NOT allowed to behave in a way which calls your manliness/heterosexuality into question. That includes making out with guys even if you're drunk and/or unconscious.
That's a hetero problem, though, as it doesn't originate within the gay community. I think most gay guys would defend a straight guy's indiscretions whereas straight guys would point out that it means, "dude, you're gay!"
Your view is interesting and refreshing because you are living in a dorm situation with other men and are speaking from real knowledge. I am so tired of all the "is he gay" speculation that we see out there. Most of the time it is not true and especially with the str8 guy on Brenton's blog. Thanks for writing your post!
